Remember When Ice Cream

Remember When Ice Cream

Pittsburgh's Largest Ice Cream Cone

The building where Remember When Ice Cream stands was originally built as a barbershop in 1960 by a man who lived in the neighborhood. However, by the time the building was completed, a barbershop had opened only three doors away. The original owner decided to convert the building into a soft serve ice cream stand which he and his family ran for three years. It was then sold to another neighborhood family who operated it as ice cream store for 28 years. The building was painted red, white, and blue and they served chocolate, vanilla, and twist soft serve ice cream cones, sundaes, and banana splits.

In 1991, Mary G. purchased the business and renamed it Remember When. She added homemade hard ice cream, chills (soft serve ice cream in a cup with toppings blended in), and a number of other items to the menu to include the Memory Cone, a soft serve ice cream cone so tall it must be served out the side door. In 1993, Remember When was painted the iconic bright pink and white color scheme you see today.

In 2017, after 26 years of serving the community, Mary retired from ice cream and sold the business to the current owner, Deb, who runs it with her son, Mike. Both Deb & Mike are committed to keeping the family business going & continuing to serve Remember When Ice Cream’s loyal customers. Deb has recently added Pandora Radio, so now there is music from a different decade played every day of the week in addition to the live DJ playing Doo-Wop on Sunday nights. She has also reorganized the equipment inside as well as switched the pick up and order windows to improve efficiency and reduce customer wait times. Mike is the operations manger & his primary role is to ensure everything is operating smoothly in the shop & see that customers are receiving the exceptional service they deserve. Remember When Ice Cream will continue to offer the community tasty frozen treats as it has for over 50 years.
