The original Remember When ice cream store was built as a barbershop in 1960 by a man who lived in the neighborhood. By the time the building was completed, a barbershop had opened only three doors away. The original owner converted the building into a soft serve ice cream stand, and his family ran it for three years. It was then sold to another neighborhood family, who operated it as ice cream store for 28 years. During that time, the neighborhood ice cream store served chocolate, vanilla, and twist soft serve ice cream cones, sundaes, and banana splits. The building was painted red, white, and blue.
In 1991, Mary Gettel, of West Park, purchased the store and renamed it Remember When. A number of items were added to the menu. In 1993, Remember When was painted hot pink and white.
Through the years Remember When has become a full service ice cream store. The menu offers dip cones, chills, ice cream cakes, novelties, and hot food made to order. Super premium hard ice cream is made on the premises, with exclusive Remember When recipes, which include unique flavors only found at Remember When.
Remember When celebrates Christmas in July with music, special promotions, and customer participation. Throughout the season, the store features fun, imaginative events, such as hoola hoop contests, outdoor sock hops, and contests of all types.
Today, Remember When is known throughout Pittsburgh, and surrounding areas, for the “Memory Cone,” because “the Memory will always bring you back to Remember When.”
